It is the coolest experience to be in another country
where SO much seems familiar (the language, the culture, etc.)
and yet there are all of these little details that make you stop.
Like, I’m in love with the fact that the doorknobs are all latches.
And that, at Christopher’s house, they are all shoulder high instead of waist high.
I am ENCHANTED by the fact that all of the birds are different.
I’ve been waking up at 5am every morning and I come out into the “lounge room”
and just lie on the sofa listening …
There is one bird I’m particularly taken with that I’ve been calling “goat bird”
because it makes these crazy, urgent ‘AHHHH!!’ sounds
that remind me of that weird noise goats make.
I’m told the bird is a magpie, but I Googled them
and none of the videos match the sound of “the goat bird”, so I don’t think so.
I also heard (and later saw) a kookaburra!!
Their call is SO distinct and I just grinned like a 5 year old when I heard it.
There is another bird we haven’t identified yet that sounds just like an old man whistling.
I also love listening to Australians swear!!
Hearing them drop f-bombs is AWESOME.
I try so hard not to grin, but I’m entirely amused.
The accent. It just … well, swearing sounds way better in Australia.
I love the MONEY!! It’s so pretty.
I have to go to the shop and exchange my U.S. dollars for some AU $ of my own
but their bills are colorful and every single one has a woman on it!
(A man on one side and a woman on the other.
WELL DONE, Australia!) <– take note America!
The driving on the opposite side of the road thing is still weirding me out.
I keep thinking we’re about to crash head on every time Christopher turns a corner.
I am determined to try it though.
So before I leave, that’s on my “must do” list:
find a semi-safe place, away from innocent bystanders, and try my hand at left side driving.
I don’t know if anyone actually wanted to hear any of this.
I just thought I’d share a few of the details so far.
We only just started leaving the house yesterday
so I still have SO much to see, do, and experience.
Having so much fun and feeling VERY loved and insanely HAPPY!
Thanks to those of you who have been cheering this adventure on.
